I know I missed last weeks deadline but I came down with a very bad cold. Remember the theme for this piece is "City Smells" and it has to be 500 words or less. Here is the final draft that was entered into the competition:

A City Walk Adventure

“Violet, hurry up please!” my Mom said as she pulled my arm with her warm and sweaty hand.
“Mommy, please slow down, you’re hurting my arm!” I cried. My Mom looked at me and frowned. She slowed down, but she was still moving too fast. She was pulling me so fast that I thought I would start flying behind her. I wish I did fly because then I could soar over the cracked sidewalks, above the holes in the street and through all of the people. If I did fly then my arm wouldn’t hurt so much and my legs wouldn’t ache.

I tried to slow down to look at buildings that seemed to touch the sun, but my Mom pulled me faster. It was hard for me to see where we were. I could smell more than I could see. The smell of bread was in the air. I wanted to follow the smell like a cartoon mouse following a smell line to cheese. The smell made me so hungry that I wanted to eat all of the bread. Then I smelled pizza! The pizza was probably sitting on a table waiting for me to eat, covered with mushrooms and lots of yummy cheese. For my birthday Mommy had a pizza party and it smelled so good that I had wanted to jump on it and rip it apart with my teeth like the squirrels do when they eat from our trashcan.

Then I smelled pee. It reminded me of when I accidentally didn’t pull my panties down far enough and I wet myself. My accident had smelled really bad and I needed to take a bath and change my clothes. I don’t think this was me though. The smell seemed to be coming from everywhere. I looked at the people walking by but no one seemed to have wet spots.
“Mom, who peed?” I asked.
“No one, ignore it please. It will go away soon,” she said. But the smell was getting worse. There must have been a pee monster chasing us that was trying to suffocate me. I noticed some people sitting on the side of the street. They looked scary and dirty. I wondered if they had peed themselves and needed to take a bath. I walked towards a man to ask if he needed to use our bath but my mom pulled me away.
“But Mommy, I think he peed himself, he needs a bath!” I said.
“He can find his own bath. Please just stay with me, we’re close now,” she said. She sounded tired and I didn’t want to upset her anymore. I stayed close behind my Mom and stared at the people from behind her skirt. Soon we reached the bus station and went inside. It didn’t smell like pee anymore and I was happy.
